How To Stay On Top Of Taking Care Of Your Roof

Posted on October 16, 2018 by Earl J. Mackie

A major issue with your roof is no fun for any homeowner. It’s better to see to small problems before you’re overwhelmed. Roof care begins with a good base of knowledge. Look at these tips to help you know how to proceed.

Leaks come from having damaged shingles, but you should also inspect your roof’s foundation. Water can get into your home anywhere that dry rot has occurred. Look at every entry point, even rotten wood, to see if the problem can be solved for good.

The number one priority when doing any roofing repairs is safety. Trying to repair a leak while it’s raining or during a storm can seriously injure you, or worse! Until the weather gets better, put a bucket underneath a leak. Check your roof out when the weather gets better to see if the issue is something you can fix.

TIP! Don’t check out and fix a leak until the rain stops. Fixing a leak isn’t easy, but it is even more difficult in the rain as you might slip.

Whenever the weather is bad, you should never get on top of your roof. You are far more likely to sustain an injury–or worse. Only work on your roof if the weather is dry and sunny.

In terms of repairing leaks, you need to have the job done right on the first crack. This means that it’s not a good idea to patch up the first leak you come to and stop there. If you take the time to check your whole roof, you will not have to deal with additional, often worse, problems down the road.

Full Amount

TIP! Sometimes a leak is the result of a faulty shingle, but other times, there may be an issue with your roof’s foundation. Dry rot in siding can lead to leaks.

Always make sure that you don’t pay the full amount up front if you don’t have to. You may have to pay around 25% of the amount to get the job started, but try not to pay more than that. Some contractors will not consider your roof as a priority anymore once you pay the full amount.

Have you checked the contractor’s credentials? The need for licensing is nearly universal. Ensure that all documentation is present and in date. In addition, contractors should have full liability insurance in case they have an accident at your home. That way, you will not be liable.

If you think your roof has a leak, bring a hose with you and spray the roof down. This might help you determine if you do indeed have a leak and also where the leak is located. You can do this for free, and on your own, without bringing in costly roofing professionals.

TIP! There are quite a few things that need to be asked to a roofer before signing any contracts. Talk about the number of nails that they will use in the repair.

If you plan on being a responsible homeowner, you can’t afford to neglect your roof. This creates more serious issues down the road. Instead, you should use what you just learned to become as savvy as you can be regarding your roof. When your roof is maintained, your life will be easier.
